Can You Get Past the Seven Deadly Sins of Renting?

Halloween is often considered the United States primary inversion holiday. This is the day where the good dress as bad and celebrate the things we normally avoid: spooks, scares, and Tiger Kings. This is the season to think about all the bad things out there with a campfire and a flashlight under our chins.  We can prepare for the worst of the worst: the seven deadly sins of renting.

This is the season to think about all the bad things out there with a campfire and a flashlight under our chins.  We can prepare for the worst of the worst: the seven deadly sins of renting.

Lust

He who wants more than he has with carnal gaze. This renter goes to openings and tours that they know they do not qualify for. It’s outside their price range, outside their needs. They waste your time and for some reason their own, ogling that brand-new spa bathtub. They might drag you through the whole process, talking about all the things they love and want and need in this home despite knowing full well they can’t qualify. At least you can turn them down, right?

Lust

He who wants more than he has with carnal gaze. This renter goes to openings and tours that they know they do not qualify for. It’s outside their price range, outside their needs. They waste your time and for some reason their own, ogling that brand-new spa bathtub. They might drag you through the whole process, talking about all the things they love and want and need in this home despite knowing full well they can’t qualify. At least you can turn them down, right?

Gluttony

A property manager’s job is to, shortly speaking, provide a safe habitat for living. Many people believe that this now includes facial mask rulings in public spaces. For larger apartment complexes, this could include a coffee corner, laundry room, exercise room, pool area, and other open, walking spaces such as hallways or entry spaces.

Greed

If they already have or have not doesn’t matter, they always want more and more. That first bathroom already has a walk-in shower? The second one needs to be converted now too, at your expense. Actually, they want a third bathroom, who cares if that’s physically impossible? These demands may be ludicrous, outlandish – but there’s no stopping someone who’s been tinted green.

 

Greed

If they already have or have not doesn’t matter, they always want more and more. That first bathroom already has a walk-in shower? The second one needs to be converted now too, at your expense. Actually, they want a third bathroom, who cares if that’s physically impossible? These demands may be ludicrous, outlandish – but there’s no stopping someone who’s been tinted green.

Sloth

You probably saw this one coming. This could be one of the more prevalent sins a renter commits, or maybe it’s just the most noticeable. A sloth-like renter is lazy and unmotivated. Their rent is late, sorry, they just, yawn, forgot. They don’t clean up after themselves. Why should they? It’s not like they’re having guests over. They are indifferent to the maintenance of the home, whether it’s a leaky pipe or taking the trash out before it smells to the point that there are complaints from neighbors. If this keeps up, you know you’re going to need their full deposit and more when it comes to cleaning up when they leave.

Sloth

Oh, this renter is the one to pick up a chair and throw it at the wall ‘til the dry wall comes a ‘crumbling. It’s not your job to worry about a renter’s personality traits or their personal, emotional journey towards enlightenment, but when he’s screaming his head off and kicking and punching the property during temper tantrums, it becomes your concern. Wrath poses a real threat not only to the property’s desire to continue standing, but to the neighbors surrounding and other renters who may be near.

All their friends have fancy new smart-locks on their front doors, and you should get one for them, too. This gets exhausting far too fast. How many times can you explain that just because someone else has something doesn’t mean they get one, too?

They have never done anything wrong, and if you manage to get across the point that they have, they think you’re attacking them or destroying their reputation. They will say something is your responsibility to fix , but when you remind them that they broke it in the first place and is not actually your place to fix it, they get infuriated. They have been the best renter, they have never done anything wrong ever, this is the first time they have ever needed something from you (true or not doesn’t matter), why can’t you do this one singular thing that they need from you? Don’t you know they are your best, most loyal, always pays on time renter? Why are you treating them like dirt, they don’t deserve that? A renter with too much pride can be a handful, and when they get going, there’s no way to stop them, is there?
