Your Tenants Are Beginning to Celebrate. How Do You Handle the Holidays?

You are not alone if you spent the weekend singing Wake me up when September ends! As cheesy as it is, September serves as a marker that summer has officially ended, and the singular ‘best’ time of the year has officially come if you love a good holiday. Halloween is America’s favorite inversion holiday, Thanksgiving is a time for family, and New Year’s is the moment of promises that next year will be better. Your tenants are itching to break out their faux cobwebs, or are breaking out their turkey basters, or perhaps if they’re looking far ahead, what the best resolutions will be to make for the oncoming 2022. Holidays this year may look a bit different from 2020 and even the years prior, but that doesn’t mean you should have no clue what to expect!

Halloween

There’s a lot of kids who were kept home last year and were unable, or at the least, not allowed, to participate in the grand tradition of dressing up and . While last year one could expect a rather relaxed, laid-back day, perhaps a few doorbell rings, this year, one might want to prepare for the opposite. The ongoing delta variant may hold a few people back, however some people may be looking to ‘make up for lost time’ which may be a running theme for the future holidays. What does this mean for you?

Besides a greater (or more enthused) foot traffic, it may not mean very much!  You may find that some tenants didn’t put out Halloween decorations but this year they did. Take a moment to warn your tenants about looking out for unnecessary property damage. The high foot traffic of Halloween is centered around ‘tricks and treats’ and for those who aren’t too careful may end up encouraging the former. The most likely to happen is getting egged, and if your tenants don’t take care to clean that up can result in long lasting stains and smells. It’s hard to sell a property that has the permanent stench of rotten eggs. A trickster happy teen who didn’t get the proper treats may not limit themselves to some cage-free eggs, either, and leave you having to repair fences or gates, while toilet paper gets trapped to the tops of your trees. Remind your tenants to keep an eye on their foot traffic, and hopefully this will be a lot smoother.

Thanksgiving

Ah, Thanksgiving, one of the biggest causes of home fires. We’ve discussed before how adorable turkey-based gratitude holiday is an incredibly dangerous statistic. As people are once again allowed to travel and move around the country, people will be leaving their COVID-Bubbles to greet the family members that they have been missing so much. Thanksgiving is a very dramatic holiday. In 2020, USA Today reported that 87 thousand turkeys had “exploded” just before the day, which means it hadn’t even started yet. With the day being three times as likely to make the smoke start fuming, it’s a perfectly fine time to remind your tenants to test and check their fire and smoke detectors.

Sunday Night Football

Coming into fall there will be plenty of people who are thrilled about their lattes and cat ears coming back into fashion, but there’s just as many eagerly anticipating the Sunday night tradition that also makes its big return. That’s right, football, and of course some others like baseball. People get together to ‘watch the game, and it’s not typically such a big deal. However, it does include some dangerous activities such as drinking alcohol and grilling.

If you have a guest limit, this would probably be the time to mention it. The best way to avoid drunken and disorderly damage is to ask that there aren’t too many people going wild. While the World Series isn’t the biggest alcohol induced party, that won’t stop it from happening. Also remind your tenants if you allow gas based grilling on your properties to keep their grill a foot or two away from the main structure.

On the bright side, holidays shouldn’t be too wild this year as many may still be reluctant to leave their little bubbles that have grown so tight over the past near-two-years. You have plenty of time to prepare for the oncoming holidays, and most likely as time gets closer, you’ll have more warnings for what to expect as they come around.
